Learning from the Wisdom of Mentors
IITF helps you to find a mentor in an
educational institution or at work who will guide
you as you learn new skills .
Learn about the work environment from someone who
is experienced in and knowledgeable about a particular
field.
Introduction
Mentoring enriches and fosters environments in which
to learn, teach, and grow. Mentors are experienced
professionals who volunteer their time and expertise
to guide less experienced professionals in the workplace.
Mentors also exist in schools, colleges, and universities;
these mentors are usually professors who teach students
about their professions.
Mentors not only transfer their knowledge,
but also demonstrate how to acquire and apply the
critical thinking skills and the methods of enquiry
needed to create and communicate that knowledge.
Good mentors are
- empathic--sensitive to the needs of the protégé,
- responsive to the desire to learn,
- knowledgeable of the career field or profession,
- aware of the limitations of the protégé,
- trust builders, and
- patient.
Good mentors also show an understanding of the new
employees or of students who often are struggling
with personal difficulties or problems in adapting
to the particular culture of the company or institution.
Caring mentors also provide the foundation for specialized
insights and positive reinforcement. These insights
and reinforcements increase and reward intellectual
curiosity and make new employees and students value
the learning process not only for its utility, but
also for the satisfactions derived from achieving
goals.
Lifelong Learning
Your learning doesn't end when you leave
college. Whether you are working, going to school, or
retired, you are always learning something. It is the
quality of that learning experience that becomes so
important. This section is devoted to helping you gain
some control over your lifelong learning. It is divided
into several key sections:
Professional Development
Continuing Your Education
Alternative Forms of Learning
The key to the quality of your learning
is self-assessment. You may want to refer back the
sections of this Website entitled Establishing Goals
and Identifying Qualifications.
Another approach to understanding your
learning needs is to conduct a SWOT analysis. SWOT
stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and
Threats. The example below illustrates how you can
conduct a SWOT analysis of yourself.
Strengths
Strong research skills and the ability to use the Internet
and e-mail for effective communication
Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, Access,
and PowerPoint
Experience working with teams to meet deadlines on time
Weaknesses
- Need to improve ability to integrate Office software
programs
- Need to improve English writing and grammar skills
- Need to improve keyboarding skills
- Need to gain more hands-on work experience
Opportunities
- Need for young, motivated and highly trained workers
in business
- High demand for Microsoft Office professionals
- Demand for workers who are willing to relocate
and/or travel
Threats
High volume of students graduating from
other college programs at the same time as I am
Recent software upgrades threaten to make my skills
obsolete in a short period of time
Many of my competitors have more work experience than
I do
Print this page and take a few moments
to do your own SWOT analysis. Be as honest with yourself
as possible. If you are unsure of your strengths or
weaknesses, ask a friend, professor, or co-worker.
